Poets Wearing Hats

Is a poem like a hat?
It fits the brain, that
word hoarder meant
to forestall language
run amok. Word silage
is not meant to break
the free lines we sweat,
puffing and wrangling
words into silos, while
free-range writers
allow beastly verbs
to escape chain-link or
picket fences and dare
us to let loose what's
waiting under our lids.
