NIGHT VISION

Soldiers on night patrol
wear heavy goggles
and their world goes green.

When I wake in the dark,
I know the power
is still on silent standby
given the glow of time,
a green blur without my glasses,
folded safe into their pretty case.

I use a small flashlight to guide me
past dog toys. I may stumble
but a tennis ball will not
explode
and take off my legs up to my knees.
