Dubious Air

Old heroes desperate for fame
rode into battle with mace, saber, or spear.

In myth magic mattered, but
we have no giant beanstalk,
no sword from a stone,
no lone rider on a fine horse,
no white hats or masked heroes
or magic potions to save us.

Our lungs inhaling dreadful particles
and skin a tissue-thin carapace, we
will be netted from warming seas.
